More Mobile Usage from Japanese and Korean Providers
Japan’s leading mobile service provider, NTT DoCoMo, and the biggest carrier, SK, from Korea, are the regulars on the International Communication Expo of China. Every year, these two companies display an array of newly developed mobile technology. This year, both companies are going farther away from the typical mobile phone services. It connects with transportaion, finance, radio, safety, publishing, retail and other aspects, thus forms an omnipresent mobile application space.
Both of these companies have several things in common. First, mobile phones have more and more functions, not only for taking/making calls, but also as an information carrier. On the DoCoMo display, mobile phones with FeliCa chips can be used for buying all sorts of tickets, such as train tickets, movie tickets, and opening doors, borrowing books from libraries or private collections, it can also be used as membership cards. SK from Korea displayed MONETA service, basically the same as FeliCa. Moneta’s main focus is on finance. Mobile phones using MONETA can verify, confirm payment, receive information about stocks and bonds. It’s a total combination of mobile financial services, plus wired and wireless communication. Consumers can enjoy safe and easy services from both mobile and financial aspects.
The content of mobile multimedia is more and more rich. SK’s high def. mobile television via VOD, can receive music, music video and other media content. DoCOMo and other Japanese enterprises formed 30-million YEN joint capital enterprise, to research and develop more media services.
Wireless Internet technology is also advancing, combining with satellite communication, the notion of “anywhere, anytime” is not just a concept anymore. SK is one of the companies that marketed and commercialized CDMA, CD-MA2001x, CDMAEV-DO, HSPDA, Satellite DMB. DoCoMo’s i-mode has successfully transfered from 2G to 3G platform.
Due to the limited domestic markets, both companies are shifting their target to markets abroad. SK has invested in China, Vietnam and USA, DoCoMo has cooperated with British and Dutch carriers, and has gained substantial market foundation.
